This year for Practice Thanksgiving, Mr. Geek and I are trying out a few new recipes using buttercup squash. Because we have a few buttercup squash to spare, even after giving many away.

Yesterday, I tried a recipe for buttercup squash pie. I'll admit, I made an extra pie to try ahead of time (even thought that kind of goes against the spirit of Practice Thanksgiving) just in case it was really gross. The final product turned out to look and taste pretty much like pumpkin pie - maybe a slightly milder flavor. It seemed a little anticlimactic after fretting all day about how my squash pies would taste, to have them turn out like a regular old mundane run-of-the-mill pumpkin pie. Mr. Geek made a buttercup squash dish that resembles sweet potatoes. I haven't tasted it yet, though.
In additional to our numerous buttercup squash, here are a few late photos of our other fall crops. We harvested about a gazillion sunflower seed heads, which we will let the birds eat this winter.

We had gourds of all shapes and sizes. We kept a few for decorations and gave the rest away.

And we harvested lots of interesting decorative Indian corn that had been cross-pollinated to varying degrees by sweet corn.
And of course, the pumpkins. This was only a part of the pumpkin harvest. Except for the couple that we kept for ourselves, all the pumpkins were long gone weeks before Halloween. It turns out that pumpkins are much easier to give away than buttercup squash - go figure. So Happy Practice Thanksgiving to all! And incidentally, today is also B's arbitrarily assigned birthday, so happy birthday to B, one year old-ish today!

Happy Birthday, B! You are one lucky puppy - but I bet that you know that.
My friends have a similar tradition because they always have to go to someone else's house for Thanksgiving itself. So, sometime in the fall, they announce Thanksgiving dinner. It's fun having Thanksgiving dinner on a random day!
Buttercup squash is one of the things that K is allowed to eat given her chronic pancreatitis... (the restrictions on her diet are crazy). If only I lived near you!
It all looks good and I'll bet tastes that way too. It was an awesome year here for vine crops. Tomatoes and peppers not so good.
Happy birthday, B!
It must be so cool to have all of those veggies (ARE they veggies?) available to you. It sounds like you could have some pretty unique and yummy-tasting meals from them.
(PS, we went to our first trial today after the run-through Friday - we got eliminated in TnG.. zoomies.. and NQ in Regular mostly due to my nervous handling. Marge took it all very well.)
An autumn puppy. That gives here some added distinction;)
Somewhere I read that canned pumpkin pie filling is mostly squash. I think they taste pretty similar. IMHO the winter squash is much better than the summer.
Practice Thanksgiving sounds like a great tradition. An excellent excuse to get together and overeat;)
Marnie
An excellent idea. Perhaps I will also have a test Thanksgiving.
Also, Happy birthday mate.

Happy Practice Thanksgiving to you too!

What a bountiful fall harvest. I really like the idea of "practice" Thanksgiving, although two such meals within a month might be a bit much.
Happy Birthday to B...one of the luckiest dogs I know.
Happy Birthday B! And what a delightful tradition Practice Thanksgiving is... mmmm - maybe I'll have to have a Practic Christmas and a Practice Birthday too?
Happy Birthday B!!! Wow, time flies when you are having fun, doesn't it?!
I like the practice Thanksgiving. That photo of the indian corn, wow, super photo!!
